The Problem: The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, shows that in Mozambique a large proportion of the polpulation (96%) still rely on solid fuels (firewood and charcoal) for cooking. This poses serious problems including deaths related to indoor air polution (13000 annually from which 50% are children), deforestation, and unsafe and expensive cooking fuels and stoves.
The Solution: MozCarbon is implementing a Program of Activities – Efficient and Clean Cooking for Mozambican Low Income Households. The programme will distribute and monitor the use of improved biomass cookstoves (wood and charcoal) and advanced clean cooking technologies such as electric and LPG stoves in Mozambique. Several types of stoves were identified and some were distributed: Envirofit models (CH2200 charcoal, Econochar charcoal, Econofire wood), Rocket Works, Mbaula stove (a stove with a metal sheet or aluminium with clay based charcoal rest), Zavala stove (clay based charcoal stove) and ACE 1 cookstove. The coostove dissemination aims towards the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals:
Climate Action (SDG#13) – by reducing the Amount of GHGs emissions avoided or sequestered
Poverty Reduction (SDG#1): by facilitating fuels savings to households due to usage of more efficient cookstoves, resulting in decreased expenditure with charcoal and firewood.
Good health and wellbeing (SDG#3) – by reducing the amount of pollutants in the kitchen, resulting in reduced associated respiratory and related diseases
Quality education (SDG#4) – by increasing the number of employees provided with skills development training
Gender Equality (SDG#5) – by allowing time saving associated with cooking and fuelwood collection.
Affordable and clean energy (SDG#7) – by allowing more beneficiaries (households) to have access to clean energy.
Decent work and economic growth (SDG#8) -by providing opportunities for jobs/employment specially to young people and women.
Currently, there are six projects being implemented under the Programme and Certified by Gold Standard. These projects will replace conventional stoves using charcoal fuel with improved stoves using charcoal fuel. Stoves disseminated under these projects are portable devices serving domestic users. The projects implemented by Mozcarbon are certified by Gold Standard and generate carbon credits which are sold in the market. The carbon credits allow us to sell the stoves at affordable price the the most poor. Also allow us to invest in project related activities such as marketing, environmental awareness, training, monitoring and other important project activities.
