1. Reduction of carbon emissions
MozCarbon implements projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions, thus reducing the amount of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere – contributing to overall reduction in global warming. MozCarbon derives carbon credits from these initiatives. These projects include the following:
A: Dissemination of improved cookstoves (ICS) to Mozambique households for energy requirements. Compared to the traditional cooking stoves that were previously used in the market, our ICS reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 70 %. These ICS have been developed over a number of years of practical field and lab research and have improved energy efficiencies. The amount of charcoal used by these stoves per household is also reduced by more than 60%. We are ready to partner other interested organisations to expand these energy systems in various provinces in Mozambique.
Working with local partners in the development of ICS, we have facilitated the transfer of technology to local entrepreneurs and partners thus improving and sustaining their business models. In some instances, local communities have used our ICS as water heaters long after the charcoal has burnt out due to its heat retention components and structure.
B: Implementation of REDD+ projects (Reduced Emissions through forestry Degradation and Deforestation). Since 2010, MozCarbon has been involved in the northern provinces of Niassa and Zambezia in REDD+ projects. By reducing the rates of deforestation, the amount of carbon emissions have been reduced over time and restoration of the forests in those provinces has widened the carbon sink (non-emitted carbon from the forests).
C: Distribution of accessible solar panels and related components to enable change from traditional carbon emitting energy sources to clean technology using solar power. We are also ready to partner other interested organisations to expand these energy systems in various provinces in Mozambique
D: We also support the dissemination of gas powered energy systems compared to the traditional systems of electricity, wood or charcoal. We are thus ready to partner other interested organisations to expand these energy systems in various provinces in Mozambique.
2. Advisory and Consulting Services
We provide advisory and consulting services to both the public and private sectors. We give support to private sector organisations that intend to reduce their international carbon foot print using company specific projects or carbon offsetting options using our vast experience and the experience of our global partners in Brazil, India, Australia, Netherlands, UK and Switzerland among others.
We give support to public sector organisations through various sectoral departments with a mandate for community development including the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture and the Environment, FNDS (National Development Fund), FundInvest, INOQ, FUNAE amongst others. We also work with other external organisations and NGOs in the implementation of energy efficiency projects/programs as stated in our mission statement. In the past we have worked with EEP Southern& East Africa, EnDev, Arvsi, Kulima and SNV in the implementation of these projects in Mozambique.
3. Community Development
Our Improved Cookstoves come at a subsidized price thus directly benefiting the end users. In addition, household energy costs are significantly reduced, leading to improved household income savings. Laboratory and field tests have proven that household smoke levels are significantly reduced during the usage of our ICS, leading to health benefits for the household and at community level.
For the REDD+ project, the legislation allows for percentages of gross revenues derived from these projects to go directly towards community development projects such as implementation of improved irrigation systems and use of improved farming methods. MozCarbon has archived significant amounts of data on forests and forestry management. This data is available for usage to interested parties as long as applicable terms and conditions of provision are met.
4. 100 % involvement
We believe in getting totally involved in our projects together with our stakeholders to achieve reduced carbon emissions and the sustainable development of local communities.
